The Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) contains a large number of requirements for the handling of electrical and electronic equipment. We have compiled the most important ones for you below.

1. The meaning of the symbol “crossed-out garbage can”
The symbol of a crossed-out garbage bin regularly shown on electrical and electronic equipment indicates that the device in question must be collected separately from unsorted municipal waste at the end of its service life.

2. Separate collection of old equipment
Electrical and electronic devices that have become waste are referred to as old devices. Owners of old devices must dispose of them separately from unsorted municipal waste. Old devices in particular do not belong in household waste, but in special collection and return systems.

3. Batteries and rechargeable batteries as well as lamps
Owners of old devices must, as a rule, separate old batteries and accumulators that are not enclosed in the old device, as well as lamps that can be removed from the old device without causing damage, from the old device before handing them in to a collection point. This does not apply if old devices are prepared for reuse with the involvement of a public waste disposal authority.

4. Options for returning old devices
Owners of old appliances from private households can hand them in free of charge at the collection points of the public waste disposal authorities or at the collection points set up by manufacturers or distributors in accordance with the ElektroG.
Shops with a sales area of ​​at least 400 m² for electrical and electronic equipment and those grocery stores with a total sales area of ​​at least 800 m² that offer and make electrical and electronic equipment available on the market several times a year or on a permanent basis are required to take back electrical and electronic equipment. This also applies to sales using remote communication means if the storage and shipping areas for electrical and electronic equipment are at least 400 m² or the total storage and shipping areas are at least 800 m². Distributors must generally guarantee the take-back by providing suitable return options within a reasonable distance from the respective end user.
The option of returning old equipment free of charge to distributors who are obliged to take back equipment exists, among other things, when a new, similar device that essentially fulfils the same functions is given to an end user. If a new device is delivered to a private household, the same old device can also be handed over there for collection free of charge; this applies to distribution using remote communication means for devices in categories 1, 2 or 4 according to Section 2 Paragraph 1 of the ElektroG, namely "heat exchangers", "screen devices" or "large devices" (the latter with at least one external dimension of more than 50 centimetres). End users are asked about their intention to return the device in these cases when they conclude a purchase contract. In addition, there is the option of returning old devices free of charge to distributors' collection points, regardless of whether a new device is purchased , for old devices that are no larger than 25 centimetres in any external dimension, and this is limited to three old devices per device type.

5. Data Protection Notice
Old devices can often contain sensitive personal data. This applies in particular to information and telecommunications technology devices such as computers and smartphones. In your own interest, please note that each end user is responsible for deleting the data on the old devices to be disposed of.

Please make sure that you dispose of your old batteries and rechargeable batteries at a municipal collection point or local retailer, as required by law.
Disposal via normal household waste is prohibited and violates the Battery Act.
The return is free of charge for you. You are also welcome to return the batteries / rechargeable batteries purchased from us to us free of charge after use.

In any case, the batteries / rechargeable batteries must be returned to us with sufficient postage.

Batteries and rechargeable batteries that contain harmful substances are clearly marked with the symbol of a crossed-out garbage can (see illustration below). The chemical name of the corresponding harmful substances is also located near the garbage can symbol.
Examples of this are: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg). According to Section 17 of the Battery Act, the manufacturer is obliged to label batteries that contain more than 0.004 percent by weight of lead, more than 0.002 percent by weight of cadmium and more than 0.0005 percent by weight of mercury with the chemical symbol of the metals (Pb, Cd, Hg) for which the limit is exceeded before they are first placed on the market.

Important note regarding lithium batteries and rechargeable batteries
Please note that only lithium batteries/rechargeable batteries that are completely discharged and protected against short circuits may be handed in at the collection points. Please always discharge the batteries completely before handing them in at a collection point. Please cover the poles with adhesive tape (insulation) to protect the lithium battery or rechargeable battery against short circuits.
A lithium battery is a lithium primary battery that can be discharged once.
